Know Additives in Lubricants

Lubricant is a composition comprising a lubricant base and additives. The latter is a chemical compound that is added to the lubricating base, to fit the needs of the machine. Among the additives that are detergents, dispersants, anti-oxidation, anti-wear additives enhancers and viscosity index.

Lubricant base was not easily damaged by nature within the earth is also experiencing tremendous pressures. Perishables are additive, so good – whether a product is determined more lubricant additive content. No wonder if the producers are racing to produce a more complete formula additive.

These additives can be “run out” ability after long use. Consequently, the function will be reduced so that lubrication oil needs to be replaced. Some of the additives contained in the lubricant, among them:

Anti-wear additives (anti-wear additives). This material reduces wear on metal surfaces rubbing against the conduct of chemical reactions on metal surfaces. The result, age and longer component durability.

Cleaning additives (detergent / dipersion additives). As the name implies, this additive is useful to keep the engine clean. The trick, dirty particles do not dissolve when arrested and lubricants are not used. Thus, when the lubricant discarded, dirty particles that will come out.

Rust and corrosion preventive additive (rust and corrosion inhibitors) served to neutralize the acids formed during combustion, prevent rust and wear due to corrosion.

Anti-oxidation additives (anti-oxidants), serves to prevent lubricant reacts with oxygen, which would result in a thick lubricating oil. Thus, the physical condition of lubricants can be maintained as before.

Anti-foam additives (anti-foam), prevents the formation of froth on the lubricant, which cause a reduction in its ability to lubricate and cool the engine. If left unchecked, the engine sound becomes rough and wasteful consumption of lubricant.

Additives that can suppress the pour point (pour-point depressants). By keeping the pour point, especially at low temperature, lubricant viscosity can be maintained so that air can still flow when cold. In this way, the machine is turned on in the morning easy. In addition, the lubricant can reach the lubricated engine parts with ease.

Additives that increase the viscosity index (viscosity index improvers). This material makes lubricants viscosity does not change despite high engine temperatures. Thus, the lubricating performance remains excellent.

From the physical structure, many people assume if a lubricant was black means it’s time to be replaced. Yet precisely because the lubricating function then it is black. Conversely, if the lubricant still look clear and clean after use so long, be doubted whether the lubricant is working well.

The easiest way to find out whether the oil is still better than his physical condition was to feel him. If the oil is thick and sticky, meaning still good. But if it is a liquid such as water, oil means it is time to be replaced.
